Three-dimensional elasticity solution for vibrational analysis of thick continuously graded sandwich plates with different boundary conditions using a two-parameter micromechanical model for agglomeration

An equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach was employed to estimate the effective constitutive law for an elastic isotropic medium (i.e., the matrix) with oriented straight carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The two-dimensional generalized differential quadrature method was an efficient and accurate numerical tool for discretizing equations of motion and for implementing vari...

Lavrentiev Phenomenon in Microstructure Theory

A variational problem arising as a model in martensitic phase transformation including surface energy is studied. It explains the complex, multi-dimensional pattern of twin branching which is often observed in a martensitic phase near the austenite interface. We prove that a Lavrentiev phenomenon can occur if the domain is a rectangle. We show that this phenomenon disappears under arbitrarily s...

Vibration of Timoshenko Beam-Soil Foundation Interaction by Using the Spectral Element Method

This article presents an analysis of free vibration of elastically supported Timoshenko beams by using the spectral element method. The governing partial differential equation is elaborated to formulate the spectral stiffness matrix. Effectively, the non classical end boundary conditions of the beam are the primordial task to calibrate the phenomenon of the Timoshenko beam-soil foundation inter...

The Approximation of Higher-Order Integrals of the Calculus of Variations and the Lavrentiev Phenomenon

x (ν) (a) = x (a), x (ν) (b) = x (b), provided that, for every i in {1, . . . ,m}, Liψi is continuous in a neighborhood of x, Li is convex in its second variable, and ψi evaluated along x has positive sign. We discuss the optimality of our assumptions comparing them with an example of Sarychev [J. Dynam. Control Systems, 3 (1997), pp. 565–588]. As a consequence, we obtain the nonoccurrence of t...
